General Overview
My experience is with UniVerse on *nix (Unix, linux, AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, etc.). I have experience in MS Windows but my viepoint will not extend there, at present. I may add MS Windows related information later.
The UniVerse DBA - Overview
(exerpts from the Rocket UniVerse "Administering UniVerse on Windows and UNIX
Platforms" manual)
The UniVerse administrator is responsible for the UniVerse system and for performing any tasks needed to maintain it. These tasks include the following:
- Starting up and shutting down the system
- Creating new UniVerse accounts
- Transferring accounts to UniVerse
- Implementing system security
- Configuring peripheral devices
- Rehashing and resizing UniVerse files for better performance
- Backing up and restoring files
- Managing network services
- Configuring and managing printers
- Managing locks
UniVerse administrators can also do the following:
- Configure and manage transaction logging
- Administer data sources
- Configure and manage U2 Data Replication
- Configure and manage External Database Access
The UniVerse DBA should, also, be able to react quickly and decisively in an emergency and should encourage the company to have a Rocket Technical Support agreement in place and up to date, through Rocket Software directly or through your VAR who represents Rocket Software. It would be advisable to create an account in the Rocket Community Portal (see Link Page) for access to TechNotes, a link to product documentation, access to product installation archives, and access to open and review Cases with Support.
